Crazy Ideas, Take Three!

Is the third time the charm? No, unless by "charm" you mean "even more tragic than the first and second times"...

National Novel Writing Month is here once again, and the temptation to give it another go is strong. I've done it the previous two years and managed to succeed ("success" having nothing to do with "quality"), and hey, going for 3/3 is a pretty respectable goal.

Of course, life throws in a kink, just for fun. I lose ten days this November by being out of the country on business. Work trips are notoriously time-consuming and, while always interesting, are not necessarily beneficial to writing and stuff.

So... can I step up production and write 50000 words in 20 days instead of 301? Is there enough Mountain Dew and chocolate in the world to sustain my pace?2 And, most importantly, do you really care?3

Anyway, the point of this jibba-jabba is to say that, as I did before, I will post my progress in my LJ, on a separate filter (because every year a few brave souls try and have their eyeballs melted into bloody goo). If you're interested in reading really bad writing (which is the joy/horror of NaNoWriMo), feel free to let me know in a comment below, and I'll add you to the filter. If you were on the filter last year, you're still there, so now would be a good time to pipe up and say "OH GOD PLEASE NOT AGAIN MY EYES!!!!"4

And finally, because I can't leave these posts loaded up with seriousness and topicality, I reflect the feelings of those who have read my wonders before you:

1 Theoretically yes. Realistically... maybe.
2 Whoever sends me chocolate will get a chapter dedicated to them. I'll even try to make it a good chapter.
3 No, of course not. You're just here for the manatee picture.
4 The parabolic death rate of readers is unmistakable.
5 PROFIT!

Where is the note mark for "5"?

Also, hi. You crack me up.

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a meme, that the last point of a list (e.g. to-do list) should always be "PROFIT!" See for example the hover text on this comic.

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello! I'll admit, #5 is just there to mess with people. I can't help it. ;-)

Are you signing up for the filter? I won't be offended if you don't; it truly is a path of madness and... uh, more madness.

Up to you. I have to admit to not even reading my current flist all that much. My attention span is nonexistant.

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fair. Cheeky attention span. I'll just put you on it and you can ignore it to your heart's content. ;-)

[identity profile] fax-celestis.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
*signs up*

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Done and done! Good luck!

[identity profile] bending-sickle.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to watch the madness unfold ;) Sign me up!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You are signed up! Please leave all your worldly possessions to me in case you expire before the end.

[identity profile] flawed-karma.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll read it.

I have Percocet. YOUR WORDS DO NOT SCARE ME!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You might want to double your dosage. Also, give me some.

[identity profile] flawed-karma.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Done and no, bad. MINE.

[identity profile] djdysfunction.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say for sure that I'll be able to keep up with the whole thing, but I'd be interested in being in on the filter.

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's ok; it's mostly an exercise for me to try and write more. It's usually not an exercise in quality. More like those scenes in "Airplane" where everytime Striker is telling his life story to someone, that person kills themselves. Heh.

[identity profile] the-wanlorn.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
YAAAAY MORE NANO FROM YOU!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHA I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE NOT SICK OF THIS CRAP YET LOL

I'm in! And I might even start my graphic novel. Does that count?

[identity profile] moonchylde.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall send chocolate, if you tell me where to send it.

Preferences? We have access to such a wondrous variety in the NW.

Organic chocolate. Pepper chocolate. Bacon chocolate. Though note, I never have sampled the latter. Just heard about a shop that might have it.

Re: I'm in! And I might even start my graphic novel. Does that count?

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, bacon and chocolate! Two great tastes that may or may not taste great together!

Although I did have Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies recently, and they turned out better than one would have expected. Truth!

Oooh, graphic novel! That's much more impressive than paltry writing! You should go for it!

Three's the charm, right? So yeah, I'm in (again), please? Good luck!

(The reason I don't do NaNoWriMo? I've written around 30 fanfics in the last 10 years, one third of which is 50,000+ words, one tenth is about twice that length, and my current WIP is approaching the 200,000-word mark. I don't have to prove I can do it, I KNOW I can. What I don't need is having my tail on fire while I'm at it. :-))

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-23 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't quite have the time to write so prolifically, and I enjoy the challenge that NaNo gives me, and November generally is a quiet period for me, so those three factors combined make NaNo a decent writing environment for my taste.

Oh, I'm all for it; I've once managed to produce a 10,000+ word story within 14 hours. :) But I like having the option of taking a day or two off between bouts of frantic writing, so having to do a (more or less) set quota for a full month isn't my thing.

Looking forward to your stuff!

Ooo, pick me.

[identity profile] chesha03.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Can't be worse than some of the Buffy fanfic I've read.

Re: Ooo, pick me.

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I beg to differ! Let's see what this year holds...

[identity profile] wazira-sharira.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I have to read it. Can't be worse than mine is going to be.

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That might be a subject of much debate. Fair warning given! BYOB!

[identity profile] padparadscha.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be on the filter.

At this point Nano would just get in the way of all my writing projects, so as always I am failing to participate. But I'll read yours!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I had enough A) time and B) creative thought to have other writing projects. That's why I just take my one month a year, throw caution to the wind, and gun it. Best I can do on a budget. ;-)

[identity profile] atlanta06.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Whee! I'm doing NaNoWriMo too! I hope Year 4 is the charm!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it! I'm rooting for you! Fourth Time is the charm!

I still have almost no idea what I'm going to write. Come on, brain, throw me a bone here!

[identity profile] atlanta06.livejournal.com 2008-10-24 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a ton of plots but I don't know which to write. Developed stuff too.

[identity profile] bad-latin.livejournal.com 2008-10-26 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to be on the filter!

[identity profile] chaosvizier.livejournal.com 2008-10-27 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you're still there! You'll probably regret it this year, though... ;-)
